Alright, but in all seriousness, I’ll drop the third-person voice.

It’s hard to describe what I do. I grew up in Northern California, spent my teenage years learning French language, graphic design and photography, and I received my BA from Sacramento State University in 2006, where I studied humanities, ancient Middle East history, and Eastern religions.

After reading many of the world’s religious texts, studying religious scholarship, and experimenting with religious faith on my own for three years, I decided that most humans deceive themselves so completely into believing that some higher authority is responsible for their actions, their well-being, and their success (or their lack thereof). That”s a cop out.

In 2004 I lost two of my best friends, Chris Cravens and Kareem Khan. I decided that life is too short to f**k around and be mediocre.

In 2006 I shook hands with Warren Buffett, made friends with A-list blogger and NYT best-selling author Ramit Sethi (who happens to be from my hometown), and somehow managed to find myself in a sort of mentoring relationship with Silicon Valley serial entrepreneur and multiple-time author Rajesh Setty. I realized that nobody is out of reach.

I started Thrilling Heroics in 2006 to encourage other young professionals to take risks, to accept the challenge that life puts in front of you”not to settle and work in a cubicle and vegetate in front of the TV and be mediocre, but to pursue an unorthodox, exciting lifestyle, to strive for excellence in a career that you’re passionate about, and to make a positive difference in the world!

In September 2007, I quit my office job and have been 100% self-employed ever since. I decided that building my own business(es) and working on my own terms, on the projects I choose”even though it’s hard as hell”is way better than taking orders and making somebody else wealthy.

Eventually I’d built relationships with clients across five continents, I was already working remotely, and I decided that I wanted to make a huge life change and move abroad”somewhere as different as I could possibly find”for at least a year.

So in November 2008, I went location-independent and I moved to Thailand, setting the trend for many twentysomething lifestyle design bloggers to follow. Basing myself in Bangkok, I’ve explored all over Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Bali.

I’ve lived overseas for well over a year now. I have had unbelievable experiences that money can’t buy, I’ve made friends with people I’d never imagine, travel has taught me countless lessons about the many people of the world, and I’ve realized that there is so much more incredible opportunity available when you live abroad than you realize!

I’ve seen despicable things too, and had many lows, but that all shape who I am and add to my understanding of the world around me. In April 2009 and in April-May 2010, I witnessed bloody protests in the streets of Bangkok, literally outside my window.

So now I’ve moved to the south of Thailand, living on the beach, until I move again in 3 or 6 months to my next destination

Thrilling Heroics has grown and evolved in leaps and bounds since 2006: I’ve been ranked among the likes of Tim Ferriss, Chris Brogan, and Chris Guillebeau as one of the top 10 Digital Nomads to Learn From, and I’ve been a recipient of the Wake UP! Award for my work at TH. The blog is also one of the Unstrapp’d Top 30 Young Entrepreneur Blogs of 2009 alongside Neil Patel’s QuickSprout, Andrew Warner’s Mixergy, and Ramit Sethis I Will Teach You To Be Rich.

Cody McKibben has the kind of mindful optimism that will eventually save civilization from staggering from catastrophe to catastrophe like a drunk in a dark room. One can only hope that his generation pulls off this neat, but thus far elusive, trick of inoculating the general populace from insanity.

Outside of my own online projects, I’ve been closely involved since I moved to Thailand as an advisor and donor to In Search of Sanuk”a grassroots volunteer organization that educates children in Bangkok’s slums and raises funds for childrens homes and other causes across Thailand.

I’ve spoken at conferences in the U.S., Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, and shared the stage with prominent speakers such as Brian Wong and MindValley founder Vishen Lakhiani.

Since 2006, I’ve been involved in organizing events including Prosper Magazine’s ‘Perspectives conference in California’s capital, Global Entrepreneurship Week summits, Thailands first TEDx event”and together with In Search of Sanuk founder Dwight Turner”the monthly Bangkok Tweetup, LUSH music events, and annual Twestival fundraisers.
